GEARING - STEPPER MOTOR

SELECTION MATRIX

A variety of gearboxes in metric and NEMA frame sizes covering planetary, spur, helical, harmonic and worm technologies; economical and high performance designs; instrument, industrial and servo applications; low backlash, high efficiency and large reduction ratio constructions featuring parallel in-line and offset output shafts.

See underneath the table for explanations of the column headings.

COLUMN HEADINGS:

MODEL/SERIES - used to uniquely identify the product (Model) or a family of related products (Series).

TORQUE CONT (Nm)
- the continuous (RMS) output torque capacity for S1 operation.

TORQUE PEAK (Nm) - typically, the output torque capacity for <2 seconds operation and S3 operation - duty definitions are manufacturer dependant.

SIZE - mm: the metric body diameter of a model or series of motors in millimetres, irrespective of the front face dimensions; NEMA: the imperial body diameter of a model or series of gearboxes in tenths of an inch to the nearest tenth of an inch, irrespective of the front face dimensions. NEMA sizes allow greater interchangeability amongst suppliers, or when changing gear technologies as, for example, from a spur to a precision planetary gearbox.

TYPE - Harmonic: lowest backlash with medium-high reduction ratios for bi-directional repeatability, but at high cost; Helical: some, or all, gear stages have skewed teeth for lower acoustic noise and higher torque transfer than spur gearing; Planetary: compact and rugged for medium technology applications with in-line output shaft, normally offering high efficiency and high torque; Spur: low cost solution that lends itself to very high ratios in a variety of gear case designs; Worm: useful for right angle output shafts with self-locking capability in medium to high ratios.

NOTES - states a basic feature of a particular model/series as an aid in the selection process. LB = low backlash; XE = extreme environment.
